Our Vision
Bringing culture to life across Peterborough.
Celebrating the city
Peterborough’s story is one of movement and making.
From its Roman origins and medieval cathedral to its industrial growth and modern expansion, the city has always been shaped by people arriving, contributing and building new lives. Italian, Pakistani, Lithuanian, African, Caribbean and many other communities have helped shape the city’s culture, economy and identity.
Peterborough 2029 proposes a cultural programme rooted in belonging, participation and pride. Culture will be a tool for connection, wellbeing and confidence, not something delivered to communities, but created with them.
The ambition is to deliver a programme that:
Celebrates everyday culture alongside artistic excellence
Amplifies voices and stories often under-represented
Connects neighbourhoods to the city centre
Positions Peterborough confidently on a national stage
UK City of Culture 2029 would be a catalyst for long-term cultural change, not a one-off event. A celebration that leaves a lasting legacy of skills, confidence and opportunity that continues well beyond 2029.
Culture Built Together
Why Peterborough?
Why now?
Peterborough is one of the UK’s fastest-changing cities. It is young, diverse and growing, but faces challenges around cohesion, opportunity and visibility.
Culture offers a powerful response. It creates shared experiences, strengthens belonging, supports wellbeing and unlocks economic and social value.
UK City of Culture 2029 would:
Invest in local creative talent and organisations
Increase participation in culture across all communities
Support regeneration and the visitor economy
Build skills, confidence and leadership
Leave a lasting cultural legacy beyond 2029
Our bid is about using culture as a mechanism for positive change.
Peterborough has the talent. What’s needed is platform, investment and belief. That's how we'll unlock this city’s creative potential.
